A group of six San Pedro Junior College students are organizing an event for Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28 and are encouraging island residents to part take in turning off their lights between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The group consists of Ana Ico, Priscilla Torres, Evaly Duncan, Earl Sutherland, Malene Lopez and Yesenia Rhaburn. The group is organizing a campfire for Earth Hour which will be held at the Boca Del Rio Park and everyone is invited to participate. At the event there will be a bar and anyone interested in selling food can do so!
Earth Hour is an awareness campaign based on the responsibility that each of us should have with respect to Climate Change and the personal actions that we could take in our homes, environment and work that can help mitigate the effects of this catastrophic phenomenon. This campaign culminates the third Saturday of March each year (since 2007) with the turning off of lights in residences, businesses, buildings and constructions that are milestones in large cities, for example, the Opera House in Sydney Australia, the Roman Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
In March 2008, 50 million people in 35 countries participated actively in Earth Hour, turning off lights in their homes, offices and government buildings. The target for this year’s Earth Hour is 1 billion people, so let us join and turn off our lights on March 28. Llet us help send a powerful global message that working together we can make a difference and that our voices will be heard on climate change. For more information kindly contact Pricilla Torres at 600-3340 of Ana Ico at 602-5925.
