Belize Audubon Society announces closure of two National Parks

Closure of Guanacaste National Park and St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park due to damage suffered during Hurricane Richard.

Belize City, Belize, Thursday, October 28, 2010 - On October 24th the passing of Hurricane Richard had disastrous impacts on the country of Belize. Our protected areas were not spared; two of the most affected protected areas are Guanacaste National Park and St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park. Both sites incurred tremendous damage with large amounts of trees having fallen. The closure of these protected areas is necessary for the safety of all concerned as damages have made most trails impassable and dangerous. The Belize Audubon Society will issue a public notice informing the public of the re-opening of these protected areas. We ask that all citizens and visitors be advised of this notice.

S.P. Radiothon Fundraiser for Hurricane Victims

 A Community United
After meeting with Cabinet and obtaining the full scope of the damage caused by Hurricane Richard, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation and Area Representative of Belize Rural South, reported that the Government of Belize is not requesting any food, clothing or house supplies for those affected by the storm as they have enough to distribute at the time and have received a great donation from our Mexican neighbors.

Radiothon and Collection Drive started at Reef Radio

What GOB is asking for at the moment is the urgent need of materials for repairs of over 200 homes and structures that have been damage and/or destroyed by Hurricane Richard. GOB is already allocated funds for this but needs more assistance.
With this mind and an eagerness to assist our brothers in need, a group of island residents that represent a cross section of the island community have gotten together to organize a radiothon to raise funds that will be used to purchase building supplies and materials needed by Government and NEMO to help victims rebuild their homes.
Reef Radio will conduct the radiothon all day today, Wednesday, October 27, in front of the Reef Radio Studios starting during the Good Morning San Pedro Morning Show at 7:00a.m. through to 5p.m. Volunteers have been assigned to collect pledges but everybody is asked to deliver their donations to expedite the colleting process for a faster delivery of materials to NEMO/GOB.
A bank account will also be opened under the name “San Pedro Hurricane Relief Fund” for donations and final deposit of funds raised. Please call 660-1025 or 610-1497 to make your pledge or drop by the office to make your donations.
The groups who met up and organized the event include members from the Honduran and El Salvador Community, the San Pedro Red Cross, San Pedro Junior College, San Pedro Roman Catholic School, Saga Humane Society, San Pedro Tour Guide Association, the Ambergris Caye Chamber of Commerce, the San Pedro Business Association, Hon. Manuel Heredia, the San Pedro Town Council, Reef Radio and Ambergris Today. Others groups and organizations are expected to join in as everybody is invited to join in and extend a helping hand.
