Belize on Animal Planet, Tuesday Night

Remember to set a date for Tuesday, January 19, at 8p.m. on Animal Planet (local channel 50) to see Animal Planet: Wild Recon with animal adventurer Donald Schultz who will be featuring Belize on a premier episode. If you can't see it, remember to set your VCR to record it.

Premiering Tuesday, January 19, at 8p.m.: On this mission, animal adventurer Donald Schultz travels to the exotic nation of Belize, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala on the Caribbean coast of Central America. He sets out on a dramatic search for deadly animals that are the targets of poachers, like crocodiles, sharks and rays.
His goal is to collect blood and tissue samples needed for research before these endangered animals disappear. He heads into the dense rainforest canopy to track down the loudest animal in the world, the howler monkey, a critically endangered primate that's falling prey to poachers. While there, Donald stumbles on his least favorite creature, a tarantula spider that's nearly as big as his hand. In an unusual "milking" procedure, Donald anesthetizes the spider, and then uses a tiny electric shock to draw its rare and understudied venom.

BEL Says More Power Outages to Come

Over the weekend, there were a number of power outages that had to be endured and according to Belize Electricity Limited, bad weather and equipment maintenance is to blame. On Friday night the power went out countrywide and it was due in part to a ground wire that broke away from a pole near the Buena Vista Substation and caused a fault on the transmission line between Mexico and Belize. The outage was extended because the Gas Turbine is currently out of service for maintenance for two weeks.

A release from BEL says that because the Gas Turbine was out of service the restoration had to be coordinated with Belize Electric Company Limited and Belize Aquaculture Limited. Hydro Maya Limited has also informed BEL that their generating equipment has suffered damage due to a mechanical failure and consequently will be out of service while the repairs are being completed.

On Sunday Belize City lost power around 2:30pm due to a lightning arrestor failure. The arrestor was replaced and power was restored shortly before five thirty. Other power outages were reported on Sunday night and Monday along the Western and Southern Highway. To make matters worse, CFE had limited the supply to BEL so as to complete repairs to their system. Those restoration works at CFE were supposed to be completed within three months. However, BEL has been informed that CFE continues to experience generation problems and will have to take out another one of their large generators for maintenance. BEL says that this can worsen the current power supply situation, which is already critical but they will keep the public informed of any further developments.

San Pedro Cenote Deeper than Expected

After the earthquake hit Honduras on Thursday, May 28 and shook Belize as well, a sink hole (cenote) was found in an empty lot about one mile North of the bridge. The sinkhole measured about 30ft in diameter and although the depth cannot be measured it is believed to be more than 30ft deep.
Last week Thursday, June 25, a group of workers from Graniel’s was sent to the area to try to pump out the water from the cenote. Several attempts were made but efforts seemed futile as the water level rose up again and the edges were crumbling in. One person has attempted to dive into the cenote but ran out of rope. Other attempts will be make to determine its depth or any connections to underground cave systems.

John Travolta Cruises into Belize

According to news reports from Belize City, News 7 and Channel 5, John Travolta was in Belize yesterday, June 11. Travolta caused quite a stir when it became known that he was one of the passengers on the Enchantment of the Sea cruise ship. The international celebrity docked at the Radisson Pier shortly after four this afternoon where he stayed in the VIP room of the Fort George Hotel.

He did not want to talk to the media since he was on vacation and wanted his privacy. Initially, the “Pelham 123” star actually refused to leave the boat because of the media and a good number of fans. He did however leave and waved to the crowd. He then entered the Radisson and was scheduled to be there until 6 pm which is when he would have rushed to the airport and onto his plane. Travolta appeared to be with his wife Kelly Preston.

Travolta again is a first rate actor. He has won two academy awards and is widely known for his hit movies Saturday Night Fever, Grease, and Pulp Fiction. His movie career spans almost 40 years. His newest movie, “The Taking of Pelham 123” with Denzel Washington opens in U.S. theaters tomorrow. Travolta has kept a low profile since the death of his son Jett in January in the Bahamas.
