First Tropical Depression

Season's first tropical depression forms in Atlantic

The first tropical depression of the north Atlantic's hurricane season formed Thursday and forecasters said it would likely reach tropical storm strength before petering out over open seas.

"The depression is forecast to become a tropical storm over the next day or so, but then is expected to weaken or dissipate over colder waters by Saturday," the National Hurricane Center said.

At 1500 GMT the depression was located about 500 km (311 miles) south of Providence, Rhode Island or 1,020 kilometers (634 miles) southwest of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The depression formed even before the official June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which stretches though November 30.

Miss Guatemala Scandal

The Miss Guatemala 2009 Pageant was affected by a major scandal: Jennifer Chiong Miss Guatemala 2008 (also Miss Costa Maya 2008) who had been dethroned last December - for her inability to perform her duties - showed up at the event, uninvited, wearing her sash and crown, and bringing an audio track with her "farewell speech". Also being the reigning Miss Costa Maya, speculations were that Miss Chiong would not be able to travel back to San Pedro to crown the new feestival queen this year. Festival Chairman Gach Guerrero confirmed that he had been aware of the situation, but assured that whatever problems Jennifer has had with the Miss Guatemala organization does not affect her standings as Miss Costa Maya 2008. Jennifer is still scheduled to return to San Pedro in August and assume her responsibility of crowning the next Miss Costa Maya 2009.

Ambergris Today also contacted Miss Jennifer Chiong and she sent this message back to the residents of San Pedro:

“If God, the people of Belize and the Costa Maya Organization invite me to come back, I surely will return to San Pedro to pass on the Miss Costa Maya Crown. I send all my blessings to the beautiful people of La Isla Bonita. A piece of my heart is always there with its people and in my prayers I always wish for Love, Peace and Prosperity for San Pedro. I love you all so much. Thank for treating me like I am part of the Sanpedrano family. If God allows me, I shall see you all very soon.” – Jennifer Chiong, Miss Costa Maya International 2008.
