Nature Invades Isla Bonita!

Invasion at Azul/Rojo Lounge! In a blink of an eye they came, conquered and they disappeared. Conquered, they did, whatever their objective, these thousands of hermit crabs invaded the beach in the Azul/Rojo Lounge area, north Ambergris Caye last week.
And it’s yearly event, as these hermit crabs migrate every year around this same time of the month, more than likely to mate, according to neighbors in the area. “Maybe they heard about Chef Jeff's incredible cooking,” commented Rachael Eteson of absolutebelize.com who submitted the above picture to Ambergris Today. Whatever the reason, it surely is an impressive site.

Portuguese Man-O-War Wash Ashore
More than just invading the beaches of North Ambergris Caye, an even more dangerous marine creature is invading the shores of the entire island. Hundreds of Portuguese Man-O-War have been spotted wading in the shallow waters of our shores and washing onto our beaches this week. If you are heading out to the sea, please be careful of these beautifully and brightly colored jellyfish which are characterized by a purple bubble floating on the surface with long (up to 8ft) dark purple tentacles underwater. These are capable of very nasty stings; they should be avoided in the water and also on the beach. And just in case you become an unfortunate victim, some warm urine does help, we are assured by Islanders, and a visit to the doctor is recommended. But you can’t miss them. They are beautifully noticeable.

San Pedro Cenote Deeper than Expected
After the earthquake hit Honduras on Thursday, May 28 and shook Belize as well, a sink hole (cenote) was found in an empty lot about one mile North of the bridge. The sinkhole measured about 30ft in diameter and although the depth cannot be measured it is believed to be more than 30ft deep.
Last week Thursday, June 25, a group of workers from Graniel’s was sent to the area to try to pump out the water from the cenote. Several attempts were made but efforts seemed futile as the water level rose up again and the edges were crumbling in. One person has attempted to dive into the cenote but ran out of rope. Other attempts will be make to determine its depth or any connections to underground cave systems.

Invitation for Beach Clean-up
The San Pedro, Ambergris Caye community is invited to participate in a beach clean up day on Saturday, June 13, 2009. Please meet on the beach in front of the Central Park at 8:00a.m. to be assigned a clean-up location. Teams will be formed to pick up litter in target areas of Ambergris Caye. The goal is to have a large number of people participate in order to maximize the area of beach that can be cleared free of litter.
Each person will be given latex gloves to protect their hands from the litter they will be collecting. Each group will be given trash bags and instructions for collecting. The San Pedro Town Council will help to dispose of the collected garbage.
Take pride in the natural beauty of Ambergris and help keep the beach a place for all to enjoy. Let’s all pitch in and help keep our environment and home beautiful! (For more information or to volunteer call Jeff 628-8220, YWAM – Destination Paradise with the San Pedro Town Council.)
