Computers Donated to Police and Fire Dept.

Councilor Joseph Elijio delivers computer to Mr. Jerome Garcia of the S.P.F.D.

Both the San Pedro Police Department and the San Pedro Fire Department received a generous donation from an island resident who wishes to remain anonymous. With the help of Town Councilor Mr. Joseph Elijio, the donor supplied four refurbished computers with the intention for them to be donated to any community enhancement projects.
Today, Tuesday, October 05, 2010, Mr. Elijio delivered one computer to each the Fire and Police Departments. A third computer has been donated to the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) San Pedro Office and Mr. Elijio is still waiting to find a suitable recipient for the fourth computer.
Officer in Charge of The San Pedro Police Department, Dennis Arnold, commented to Ambergris Today that he is very grateful for the donation which will come in good use as the expansion of his personnel require more hardware to assist with operations at the department.
San Pedro Fire Chief, Mr. Jerome Garcia was also very pleased with the new computer for his department as he stated would also be an asset in the department’s daily operations.

Fire Scare at Caliente Restaurant

Thanks to the quick response of the San Pedro Police Department and the San Pedro Fire Department, what could have been a fire disaster in downtown San Pedro was prevent. Unofficial reports have it that around 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, the security guards of First Caribbean International Bank noticed that there was smoke coming out of the building adjacent to them (Spindrift Hotel). Reports are that smoke was coming out of the kitchen area of Caliente Restaurant. It seems that the water pump located inside the kitchen had some electrical problems which caused a thick smoke to come out. The restaurant was closed at the time. For more information on this read Friday's edition of Ambergris Today Newspaper.

Fire Scare at San Pablo Residence

Residents at a San Pablo home got a pretty big scare early this morning, as a fire broke out on the second floor of a concrete home at about 8:30am. Tenants on the ground floor of the building called the fire department as the smell of smoke filled their apartments. The Marin family, who reside in the second floor, had already left their home and nobody was there at the time of the fire. According to police officers at the scene, the fire was caused by a window AC unit which ignited a bed in one of the rooms. The concrete building mostly suffered smoke and water damage but the room where the fire started was totally damaged.

Bush Fires on the Increase

Bush fires seem to be on the increase lately and the San Pedro Fire Department has had its hands full tending to all the calls. Just yesterday the Fire Department was called to a small fire next to the Ambergris Stadium. The firemen encountered land fill in an empty lot that had caught on fire. Next door neighbors immediately called in before the fire got any bigger.

And just last week, residents extinguished this small fire that was apparently ignited by a discarded cigarette. Passersby were quick to out the fire before the fire department arrived; this was south of San Pedro Town next to Royal Palm Villas.

Two weeks ago, the San Pedro Fire Department responded to another bush fire that was reported in the Escalante Subdivision. A resident took these pictures of the fire that could have posed a threat to neighboring homes. Carelessness is the leading cause of these bush fires as people discard their lit cigarettes into the side of the road or are too careless when burning waste as they clear empty lots. The San Pedro Fire Department urges residents to be more careful and contact the department for any assistance when cleaning out and burning waste in empty lots.

Fire Averted

The San Pedro Fire Department was quick to respond to an early morning fire alarm, today Monday, June 15, after residents by Island Supermarket called in about a fire in that neighborhood. The firefighters worked hastily to put out a burning pot in one of the apartment's kitchen stove. The unattended pot of beans had caught on fire but was quickly extinguished before a large fire broke out. The call made to the fire department came from Belize City's 911 service. The fire chief reminds residents to keep the San Pedro Fire Department's phone number handy, as the response to a fire alarm is much faster with a direct call to the local fire department. FIRE call: 226-2372.
