BTIA Announces New Publisher for Destination Belize

October 5, 2010 - The Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) is pleased to announce that it finalized an agreement last week with Idea Lab Studios to publish the next three editions of Destination Belize, Belize's official visitor's guide.
For the past fifteen years, BTIA's Destination Belize magazine has been the authority on Belize travel.  Destination Belize is the trusted source of information for travelers and investors, and will continue to provide them with easy user-friendly access to current and relevant information on accommodations, tours and activities, restaurants, transportation, business, investment, real estate, meetings, events, and so much more.
"BTIA is particularly pleased with its decision to work with a local partner on this initiative for the very first time," comments Dionne Miranda, President of BTIA.  "Idea Lab Studios has been a long time partner of BTIA, and does a significant amount of work in the tourism industry in Belize.  We expect that with our new publisher, we will be able to embark on a new integrated marketing approach with Destination Belize."
The next edition is the 16th edition, and will be available in October 2011.  This edition, Destination Belize 2012, will be more than just a printed magazine.  In addition to the traditional high-quality printed piece that is distributed both locally and internationally, the publication will feature an interactive website and online version of the magazine, as well as an interactive travel piece on CD ROM.  Additional marketing opportunities will also be made available to advertisers.
The next edition is particularly important due to the significance of the Maya history and culture.  The year 2012 presents an opportunity to highlight the achievements and rich cultural history of the Belize Maya and celebrate the beginning of a new astronomical cycle.  The celebration of our Maya heritage will undoubtedly be a central theme for this upcoming edition of Destination Belize, with timely distribution in October 2011.
Destination Belize is distributed free of charge locally in-room in Belize hotels, at points of entry, at retail outlets, as well as internationally at consumer and trade shows, from embassies and consulates and for mail-out fulfillment and other requirements in support of consumers and travel trade partners.
For more information on the magazine, or to advertise, contact Idea Lab Studios at 223-6386 or info@idealabstudios.com.  For information on BTIA, visit www.btia.org or email info@btia.org.

The Hol Chan and Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve are working on a marine litter program, which is sponsored by GCFI (Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute) and CAMPAM network and forum. The objective of the project is to reduce the amount of marine litter released into waters of the Caribbean region especially within protected areas.
Through this project we want to increase the public’s awareness of the impacts of marine litter to the marine environment and health of local communities. The approach is through encouraging and developing best practices for litter management.
On Saturday, October 2, 2010, a group of 22 high school students went to the turtle nesting beach of Robles Point in Bacalar Chico for a beach cleanup. The area is an important nesting ground for Logger Head and Green Turtles but it is filled with marine debris. Staff Biologist have been studying turtle nesting activities in this beach and have found that the large amount of trash is having negative effects on nesting turtle. Therefore, we have been conducting frequent beach cleanup campaigns to control the marine debris problem in this area.
The students were given a briefing on the importance of the area and the impacts of the debris. A total of 40 bags of trash were removed from the beach. In addition, other activities will be carried out through this project including placing of trash receptacles in certain schools which will serve as a recycling project for plastic bottles.
Special thanks go out to Ramon's Dive Shop for providing a boat and two members of staff to assist in the cleanup.
