Late Night Flights

If you were wondering what the heck was up last night will all the late night flights and airplanes hovering above town until about 8p.m., you were as puzzled as most town residents. Check with airport personnel, Ambergris Today discovered that both local airlines are conducting take off and landing preparations for night flights during the upcoming season.
Airline pilots are required to practice such procedures with a trained pilot, usually the company's chief pilot. Night flights are currently only authorized between San Pedro and the Phillip Goldson International Airport as they are the only to with equipped runway lights.
As the year's end comes closer, nightfall in the country is a bit earlier and many international flights into Belize arrive just short of sunset. When the local airlines cannot fly their passengers in before nightfall, the airlines accommodate them at hotels in the city, costing money. With trained pilots to make night flights, it eliminates this problem and both airlines can fly in tourists after sundown.
