UPDATE on H1N1 Cases in Chetumal

News broke out last week that Quintana Roo Health Authorities reported an outbreak of H1N1 in Chetumal, and after making checks, Mexican newspapers El Diario de Yucatan and El Universal report 11 schools in Chetumal reported suspected cases of Influenza A (H1N1) and that five schools have suspended classes until June 15, 2009.

As of press time, authorities indicated that some students exhibited flu-like symptoms similar to that of the Influenza A. Quick tests that detect the virus were administered to these students but all came back negative. The closing down of the schools was just a precautionary measure to ensure the health of the students IF the cases proved to be positive.

The Ministry of Health reminds the public that precautionary measures must continue and that persons with flu like signs and symptoms must abstain from attending public gatherings. The Ministry of Health continues with its enhanced surveillance and health education.
