On Monday, January 19, Dr. Daniel Gonzalez of Ambergris Hope Clinic received donation of an Oxygen Concentration. This kind donation was given by Moose a great friend of Dr. Danny.
In speaking with Moose he expressed his gratitude towards Dr. Daniel, “I am very grateful to Dr. Danny for he is an honorable man and because he has saved my life twice,” commented Moose. “I believe that by donating this machine I am contributing not only to save a person’s life but I’m also giving back to all Sanpedranos who have whole heartidly made me feel at home and consider me a Sanpedrano.”
Moose is a kind man with a big heart and with lots of love for San Pedro and its people. Back in 2004, Moose cut his long dread which he had grown for over thirty years and auctioned it at Fido’s, raising a total of $1,445, which he also donated to Dr. Danny. Kudos to Moose, a true Sanpedrano at heart.

San Pedro Will Miss Dalia Flores
She was not born in San Pedro, but certainly passed away a Sanpedrana. Dona Dalia Flores came to San Pedro only a short time ago and started earning her living with a small and humble store in the San Juan area. Along with her hard working family, dedication, commitment, honesty, and friendliness, Dona Dalia uplifted her store making it one of the finest on the Island and certainly the best in her area.
But Dalia Flores was not only a businesswoman. She was a philanthropist, a generous donor to charitable organizations, civic functions, and disaster victims. Dalia recognized that San Pedro had given her so much and was willing to return her noble share to San Pedro. A joyful and patriotic person she wholeheartedly participated in the events organized to entertain and promote the Island. She was true daughter of the soil.
Her passing away at an early age sincerely leaves her family and the community of San Pedro with saddened hearts and as we take time to reflect on this grand person, Ambergris Today also extend heartfelt sympathy to her family and beloved ones. Her body will be laid to rest today at 2p.m. in San Pedro; may she rest in glorious peace.
The lifeless body of a Hispanic male person was seen floating face down in waters along the mangroves in the area known as “Siete Canales” on the southernmost tip of Ambergris Caye. Police called to the area report that about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, the body was retrieved from the water and an inspection revealed that there were no signs of visible injuries on the body.
Male person was still dressed in brown pants with belt, a grey T-Shirt and no footwear. The body was in the initial stage of decomposition and was transported to the K.H.M.H where it awaits a Post Mortem Examination. The body was later identified as that of Vanancio Augustin Tillet, 59 year-old, caretaker of Club Caribbean South of San Pedro Town. No foul play is suspected and the matter under investigation.
On Wednesday, January 21, around 1:00 a.m. the San Pedro Fire Department responded to a fire in the D.F.C area, the house belonged to Mr. Francisco “Pany” Arceo, 55 year-old Belizean. The structure was a two story building, the upper level was being rented by police officers and the bottom floor housed “One Love Grocery” store. Mr. Arceo resided in the building adjacent the store. The small building where Mr. Arceo stayed was completely burnt down, while the upstairs building and the store received minor damages. We will have more on this story as official reports come in from the Fire and Police Department.
It might be another unattractive fee that tourists will look down on and discourage them from coming to vacation in Belize, but with the signing of the new Sports Fishing regulations into law, the Coastal Zone Management Authority (CZMA) has been given the mandate to issue Sports Fishing licenses and collect Sports Fishing license fees.
Anglers wishing to go sports fishing will now have to first receive a license from the CZMA and the new legislation will be enforced by the Fisheries Department as well as the Belize Coast Guard. And although this will not affect people who are recreationally throwing a line from a pier, the new regulation will cost fishing enthusiasts some dollars to go out at sea and fish. The regulation is expected to tax dedicated anglers and hotels which take vacationers on the seas to catch large game.
The CZMA will carry out consultations in the following weeks with stakeholders on the process of issuance of the licenses, as well as the fees that will be charged. These meetings will also provide anglers an opportunity to discuss problems and present recommendations for the betterment of the industry on a whole.
The CZMA says that these recommendations will be thoroughly analyzed and where possible be incorporated into a new management plan for the industry, as well as the National CZM plan. The Traffic Department has issued a notice of the temporary closure of a section of Coconut Drive, between the Roman Catholic School and Wings Department Store tonight (Tue., Jan 20) from 8p.m. to 6a.m. Medina's Construction issued a request to close the street in order to conduct work for the new Tropic Air Terminal. A detour access to Coconut Drive will be open on the Maya Island Air Terminal side of the airstrip. Motorists please take notice of the street closure.
The cloudy skies gave way to a sunny Sunday after a week of rain and gloomy skies. This gave everybody the opportunity to head to the beach. Although the weather was still a bit chilly, the sun gave people more than enough reason to jump into the warm Caribbean Sea. Plus, we give thanks to the Town Council for sending out the street grader to fix all the pothole-filled streets early this morning.
