Ministry of Education Summer Camp

August 13, 2010 The Ministry of Education gathered a bunch of kids for their last day of summer camp at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium. The one week summer camp featured activities such as reading, coloring and skits. Mr. Chris Emmanuel was the guest speaker of the morning, enlightening the kids by reading to them a great story.

The children were also introduced to all sponsors which are Grand Belizean Estates, Scotia Bank, BTB, Hon. Manuel Heredia and many more. They were given T-shirts which stated their slogan "Learn to Read, Read to Learn" and also school gift packages for their hard work and dedication to the summer camp. Hats off to the organizers, sponsors, guest speakers and volunteers for a great success towards kids on the island.

Derrick goes to Berklee College of Music Summer Camp

On February 4, 2010 Ambergris Today published an article asking for the public’s help to send a very talented young musician, Derrick Baños, to one of the US most prestigious music school for a summer program. With much help of his band members of local band All Cayed Up, Mrs. Nancy Scott and all the supporters and fans, Derrick left today, Wednesday, July 07 to Boston where he will be attending Berklee College of Music.

Family members and friends were at the Tropic Air terminal to bid farewell to Derrick as he will be attending a five week summer program in which he will take classes on bass. Linda Mikulich presented Derrick an envelope with money which she raised after having raffled a portrait of Derrick which she painted.

Derrick has exceeded the abilities of his local teachers and is proficient in rock, reggae, blues, pop, funk and country music styles. Not only is he good and playing the bass, guitar and drums, but Derrick has built two basses, a five string fretted and a five string fretless which he uses to play. Many believe that Derrick has the potential of becoming one of the world’s great bass/guitar players.

Derrick will study and perform a wide range of popular and rock music styles including alternative rock, blues, rock 'n' roll, and more. The classes will focus on the music of important performers including Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, U2, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and more.
