The San Pedro Town Library is giving a certificate and a small gift to a student from each school who has checked out the most books from the library in the last month. The schools with students participating are the Roman Catholic Primary School, Ambergris Caye Elementary, Island Academy, and San Pedro High School. No competition was announced previous to the selection; the results were tallied from the library’s records, documenting how many books students checked out.

Library Slogan & Logo Competition

The San Pedro Town Library invites everyone to enter their “Create a slogan and logo” competition for the library. If your slogan and logo are chosen, you will receive public recognition and a cash award of $100. The library's slogan and logo should reflect our unique island and the library as a community resource.

The library provides the community with entertainment and informational resources. Soon they have plans of showing children's films, along with the regular story telling. Along with shelves of exciting books, the library is building its collection of resources for all ages to provide information on health, parenting, business, relationships, the environment, and many more topics. Entries can be submitted at the library.

US Confirms More H1N1 Cases than Mexico

WHO Influenza A(H1N1) – Update No. 24

As of Sunday, May10, 29 countries had officially reported 4,379 cases of influenza A(H1N1) infection. Mexico had reported 1,626 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection, including 45 deaths. The United States had reported 2254 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including two fatalities. Canada had reported 280 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including one death, while Costa Rica had reported eight, with one fatality.

The following countries have reported laboratory-confirmed cases, with no deaths: Argentina (1), Australia (1), Austria (1), Brazil (6), China – Hong Kong (1), Colombia (1), Denmark (1), El Salvador (2), France (12), Germany (11), Guatemala (1), Ireland (1), Israel (7), Italy (9), Japan (4), Netherlands (3), New Zealand (7), Panama (3), Poland (1), Portugal (1), Republic of Korea (3), Spain (93), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1), and United Kingdom (39).

WHO is not recommending any travel restrictions or border closures in connection with the influenza A(H1N1) virus outbreak. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported that as of 11:00 A.M. EDT today, there were a total of 2,532 confirmed cases of A(H1N1) type flu in 44 states.

BEL Announces Power Outages Through May 28

A press release sent out today, May 11, 2009, from the Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) advises its customers in the Corozal District, Orange Walk District and San Pedro Town, that commencing May 12 through to May 28, 2009, there will be several 15-minute power supply interruptions to accommodate switching. BEL states this is necessary for the company to carry out necessary repairs to the Transmission Line and install breakers at Maskall Substation, which will help to improve service reliability. Monica Vasquez is Mother of the Year '09

It was another spectacular event this year as the San Pedro Town Council held its annual Mother's Day Extravaganza on Saturday, May 9. Mrs. Monica Vasquez was named Mother of the Year and Mexican entertainer Tiffany stole the show with her spectacular performances. More in this week's edition of Ambergris Today.

Mrs. Elvia Staines' Life Time Achievement

Mrs. Elvia Staines was honored once again for being the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year BTB’s Tourism Awards with a gala dinner event at Elvi’s Kitchen this past Friday, May 8, 2009. Thirty five years in making her name and that of her restaurant’s known and established as one of the most distinguished restaurants in the country, Mrs. Elvia Staines has put her mark in the tourism industry of Belize.

Invited guests at the event were Prime Minister of Belize Hon. Dean Barrow and his wife Kim Simplis-Barrow, Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture Hon. Manuel Heredia and wife, San Pedro Mayor Elsa Paz, other BTB Tourism Award Winners among other special invited guests.

At the end of the night Elvi’s Kitchen also presented special awards of its own to long-time employees who have grown and helped establish the restaurant’s prestigious name and service. Read more on this Thursday’s edition of Ambergris Today.

Reef Week Concludes

As Reef Week comes to a close today, Ambergris Caye Elementary and Island Academy held short skit presentations yesterday, May 7 at the Lions Den. The performances were all to create awareness of our Belizean Coral Reef and ways that we can protect it.
