Eco Flight Tours South Ambergris

By invitation of ACCSD (Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development) Eco Flight, an organization for Education and Advocacy for the Environment, became involved in San Pedro’s concern for the protection of the environment. This follows a fight against South Beach’s proposed plan for a mega development project down South in the Hol Chan Reserve Area which ACCSD feels will destroy the reef, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and the mangrove habitat for marine life.

Bruce Gordon, President of Eco Flight and Jane Pargiter, program Coordinator and Office Manager carried out a surveillance flight over the town of San Pedro and the area in question. Present in the flight was Ambergris Today representing the San Pedro media and stakeholders of ACCSD. While Eco Flight will make appraisal and recommendations to ACCSD, Ambergris Today did not observe any signs of dredging nor cutting of mangroves. This is a relief for ACCSD as it would seem that their fight commenced at an opportune time before any major damage has occurred.

Illegal Immigrant Escapes from Police

News just came in that an illegal immigrant has escaped from the hands of the San Pedro Police Department and is still at large. Juanito Perez was scheduled for a court hearing this morning, but he had other plans. While being escorted to the court room, Perez managed to escape from police custody and made a dash to the door. Neighbors reported seeing him climb the Belize Electricity Limited fence and disappear from there. Police are still on the lookout, but advise that Perez poses no threat to anyone as his court case was pertaining to his illegal status on the island.

Vehicles Still on the Beach!

The sign on the beach says "No Vehicles on the Beach - SPTC", but our cameras have caught a pick-up truck parked in front of Big Daddy's. What is up with this? We see that the Traffic Department has put up a sign but no barriers to prevent vehicles from gaining access to the beach in front of Central Park. This driver clearly has no concern of our beach and thinks is above the law.
Ambergris Today just hired a new Paparazzi Photographer so better watch out! We are watching.

Lion Fish MANIA!

San Pedro is going Lion Fish CRAZY, but with good reason. After learning that the Lion Fish poses a great threat to the marine live in our coral reefs, residents are keeping a keen eye on the fish which has a $50 bounty, captured dead or alive.
"Lion Fish are all over the San Pedro Reef," commented personnel at Ambergris Divers. "This one (above) was spotted off the dive site buoy of Tres Cocos. Our diver took a few shots then called over the dive master to catch it - but the thing darted into the crevices and it couldn't be caught. We have gone back for it a few times, but have not ran across it again."

This Lion Fish, now at the Captain Shark's Aquarium, was caught this past Sunday, March 22, by crew members of Searious Adventures, making it the third of its kind captured alive in San Pedro.

Ambergris Today was the first newspaper to cover the story on the Lion Fish when news first broke out of its migration from North America to the Caribbean. Learn more about the threat of the Lion Fish by clicking HERE and HERE.
