Statement from the Government of Belize on the Crisis in Honduras
- Press Release, GOB Press Office, Belmopan, June 29, 2009 - The Government of Belize is disturbed by the events which occurred in Honduras yesterday, Sunday, June 28, 2009 involving the forcible removal of the constitutional President Mr. Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales, his expulsion from his country and the illegal detention of members of his Cabinet.
Belize condemns the actions of the military against the constitutional and democratically elected President and rejects any attempts to have him replaced as the President of that Republic with any other person. Belize, in full solidarity with SICA Member States, recognizes President Zelaya as the only constitutional President of Honduras and demands his immediate reinstatement.
Belize joins the international community in calling for the return of the rule of law and restoration of democracy in Honduras.
The Government of Belize is actively engaged in regional and international consultations on these grave developments in Honduras and in seeking an international response to this unfolding crisis.
