Support Quest to Ban Offshore Drilling

The Belize Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage is fighting hard to inform and educate Belizeans about the ecology, economics and laws of offshore drilling in Belize in its drive to push government of Belize to ban offshore oil exploration and drilling. Having met with the island’s residents on Tuesday, June 22, (Click here for full story), the coalition is asking for residents to sign their petitions. Please visit the office of Seaduced by Belize at the Vilma Linda Plaza, across the RC Primary School on Tarpon Street to sign the petition and show your support.

Miss Lobster Fest Caye Caulker This Weekend!

While San Pedro prepared for its world famous Lobster Fest, our neighboring island of Caye Caulker also prepares for its lobster season festivities. Miss Lobster Fest Pageant is coming on June 25 to La Isla Cariñosa as their Lobster Festival runs from June 25 to 27.

Reigning Miss Lobster Fest Lexee Marin

Caye Caulker Lobster Fest Pageant Committee is a non- profit organization that is organized by local youths of the island who are working passionately and voluntarily to keep a scholarship program going. They have already confirmed popular Belize media personalities William Neal (of Channel 5) and Indira Craig (of Channel 7) as hosts of the pageant that will be contested by five beautiful ladies. The contestants include Miss Iriani Pineda, Miss Ricardina Alcala, Miss Stephanie Arce, Miss Norielli Sandoval and Miss Fidellie Jimenez.

The winner of the pageant, Miss Lobster Fest 2010, will receive a $4000.00 scholarship to be used toward her education. In addition, the 1st runner up will also receive $1000.00 scholarship to be used towards her education, be it high school, tertiary, vocational studies, cosmetology or any form of education that would be of benefit towards the development of the individuals.

“This is more than just a pageant,” commented one pageant organizer. “We consider ourselves as a scholarship foundation and it is more of a community effort to impact our young ladies to grow in a positive manner whereby she can be more of a role model to our youths. The island is small and there is only so much that can be done, however instilling good values and skill in young ladies on the island can only lead to a more productive individual.”

For these reasons the pageant committee has agreed not to have a swim suit segment, but instead have a more creative segment call “Depiction of lifestyle on Caye Caulker.” This segment helps promote, culture, art and the awareness on how important sea life is toward the development of the island and eco system.

The reigning Miss Lobster Fest Caye Caulker Queen, Miss Lexee Marin, will be present to crown and sash her successor.

A meeting was held on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, by the National Aids Commission (NAC) with the San Pedro Branch to try to empower as well as strengthen the communication with the rest of the national response.

Dr. Martin Cuellar, Executive Director, stated, “The NAC is conducting a tour of its district committees to empower them and strengthen their lines of communication with the rest of the national response. This meeting identifies specific ways in which the commission’s secretariat can assist the San Pedro Committee to conduct a gap analysis, identify appropriate activities and interventions and seek funding.”

“Like every other district committee, the San Pedro Committee is the local face of the National AIDS Commission and continues to play a vital role in the accomplishment of our national goals,” concluded Mr. Cuellar.

Present at the meeting were Dr. Martin Cuellar, Executive Director; Kathy Esquivel, Chairperson; Joan Burke, Vice-chairperson; Elio Cabañas from the National AIDS Commission, Felix Ayuso, Communications Officer of the San Pedro AIDS Commission; Melanie Paz, President of the San Pedro Lions Club and Atlantida Eiley of the Red Cross.

The Meeting highlighted many great points which the San Pedro AIDS Commission can use to establish better communication with the National AIDS Commission. This meeting is said to be just one of many other meetings to come. All in all the meeting was a huge success.
